The Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. Uganda is also known as the "Pearl of Africa". It is bordered on the east by Kenya, on the north by South Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania.
Uganda gained independence from Britain on 9 October 1962. It takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country including the capital Kampala. Besides Buganda there are four other kingdoms. Victoria Lake, the biggest lake of Africa, is located in the southeast of the country.
In Uganda 37,7% of the population lives below the poverty level. The life expectancy is 50,5 years (in the Netherlands over 80 years). In average one in every four person can’t read or write. More information on Uganda can be found here.
